Mernell King has been recently named as the new Director of Training and Technical Assistance for GreenLight Training, LLC whom she has been working with/for since 2005. Prior to this position Mernell was the Chief Innovation Officer at Central Missouri Community Action in Columbia, Missouri. Prior to this role, Mernell was Early Childhood Programs Director at CMCA.
She has worked with Head Start in various executive capacities for over 25 years. She currently oversees all innovation programs at CMCA including those related to Head Start, Early Head Start, I CAN…Help My Child Stay Healthy, Eat Healthy, Stay Active!, EHS PRISON program, BRIDGE program and the Show Me Healthy Relationships program in partnership with the University of Missouri. Mernell has been a part of the National Center on Health and the Health Care Institute at UCLA for the past sixteen (16) years. Prior to her administration of the programs at CMCA, Ms. King worked as Trainer for the Training & Technical Assistance (T/TA) System serving the Office of Head Start. Prior to her many years in Head Start, Ms. King worked for the Missouri Department of Mental Health and was an elementary and preschool teacher in Missouri’s public schools.
Ms. King served on the National Head Start Associations’ Appropriations Committee, is a Coach for the Head Start PMFO (New Director’s Mentor Initiative (NDMI), has been a part of the Head Starter Network, is a member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the Region VII Head Start Association, and the Missouri Head Start Association (MHSA) where she served on the Board and as the Association President for 2 terms. Mernell served on the Missouri Coalition for Oral Health Board and is a past-president of the organization. In 2009, Mernell was awarded the National Leadership Award from the National Head Start Association (NHSA) for her national efforts on behalf of Head Start programs. In 2016, Mernell was awarded the L.E.A.D. (Leading Exceptional Advocacy with Determination) award from the National Head Start Association. Mernell has also participated in the NIKE Head Start Leadership program for Administrators of Head Start. Mernell, as a part of the “HeadStarter Network” recently attended an invitation-only event in Austin Texas from the National Head Start Association. This “think tank” was billed to help programs find ways to bring innovation into Head Start.
Mernell is a graduate of the UCLA/Johnson & Johnson Head Start Management Fellows Program, has an advanced degree in Educational Leadership and holds a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education. Mernell is a Certified Compassion Fatigue Educator. She believes in the work that she does and is committed to her staff and to assuring vulnerable children and their families have the tools they need to be successful throughout their lives.
