Another theory suggests that it may be derived from the Latin word iuniores, meaning “younger ones,” as it is the month when younger members of society were traditionally married.

An even 3rd possibility is suggested that the month was named after Lucius Junius Brutus, the founder of the Roman Republic.

  1. Pearl – Pearls are the only gemstones made by living creatures, known as mollusks of the sea.
  2. Alexandrite – A relatively modern gemstone, alexandrite is considered rare and mostly found in Russia.  The alexandrite is known for its ‘changing colors’ depending on the type of light is shone on it.
  3. Moonstone – The third birthstone of June, the moonstone, was named by Roman naturalist Pliny, who observed that the moonstone’s gleaming quality changed with the moon’s phases.
