The Power of Self-Love

As Jeffrey Borenstein, President of the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation, puts it: “Self-love is a state of appreciation for oneself that grows from actions that support our physical, psychological and spiritual growth. Self-love means having a high regard for your own well-being and happiness. Self-love means taking care of your own needs and not sacrificing your well-being to please others.”

Self-love, in its scientific definition, is self-positivity bias, which is defined as a tendency of people to rate themselves higher on the positive personality characteristics and perform more uplifting activities than the general public.

Studies have shown that self-love is linked to a host of positive outcomes, including:

  • improved mental health
  • increased happiness
  • stronger relationships
  • better physical health
  • greater life satisfaction
  • higher self-esteem
  • increased resilience
