Sadness to Happiness

What is “self-help”?

It means helping yourself—helping your brain, helping your body, helping your emotions, and helping your spirit. It’s about changing your life and becoming a happier, more balanced person.

And it’s about you—your true self, not what other people think you should be. It’s about learning how to control your own happiness and success. It’s about taking charge of your life and improving your future.

It’s about the power to create the future you want. It’s about you. It’s the best way to help yourself.

What is Self Help?

We’re all familiar with the term self-help, but what does it really mean?

It is said that “Self-help is the best help”. Self-help means always trying to help yourself without depending on others. If means that whatever you can do or you are in a position to do, you should do it.

There are a lot of different definitions of self-help out there. But when we talk about self-help, we’re really talking about a type of transformational change we personal do ourselves to change your circumstances in a positive way. Whether you’re looking to quit smoking or lose weight or simply want to start a business, self-help is also a useful tool that will help you achieve your goals.

Self-help is also about helping oneself. If we’re going to help others, we need to first learn how to do the same for ourselves. That is why self-help is so important.

To many people, self-help seems to be a very negative thing. We think of self-help as something we don’t want. But the term, when applied correctly, means helping yourself. Self-help can mean finding ways to be better in your life, in your relationships, or in the way you handle certain situations.

 Why Self Help Works

There are many reasons why self-help works. The first reason is that it allows you to control your life. Self-help doesn’t require you to ask someone else to help you; instead, you work on yourself to make changes.

If you want to stop smoking, for example, then you have to do it yourself. No one is going to come and give you the idea that you should quit smoking. That’s your responsibility.

The second reason is that self-help helps you to stay healthy. It helps you to take care of yourself. When you take care of yourself, you’re more likely to live a long, healthy life. You’ll also feel better if you take care of yourself.

The third reason why self-help works is that it helps you to be optimistic.

It has been proven that people who try to help themselves are more successful than those who don’t. They are much happier as well.

Benefits of Self Help & Why It Works

There are many good benefits for taking a self-help approach towards addressing your problems and issues. Per mentalhealth.com, they list the following benefits of self-help and why it works:

  • Self-help is empowering. Developing a self-help plan keeps you in control of your own destiny. The skills and methods you learn while engaging in the self-help process are likely to be generally helpful to you across many different aspects of your life. It is also emotionally satisfying to address issues on your own; doing so helps you to feel like a responsible and capable adult.
  • Self-help means a customized plan. Designing your own self-help plan means that you can customize your efforts so that they fit your particular strengths and weaknesses, and reflect your personal choices about how to best address your specific issues.
  • Self-help makes other people feel good about you. Your decision to engage in self-help provides some assurance to other people who may be upset with you because of your issues that you are working on your issues and taking steps to overcome them. In many cases, your self-help efforts will be noticed and appreciated by those people around you who care about you or count on you.
  • You become a role model. If you have children, your pursuit of self-help is an excellent way to teach your children to be self-sufficient and capable when they grow up.
  • Self-help makes you a better, wiser person. By increasing your self-awareness capabilities, self-help efforts can help you learn to recognize potential problems before they occur (or at least early on in their progression) so that you can head them off before they become substantial. As your objectivity (your ability to see things as they are, rather than how you would like them to be) increases, you’ll find yourself increasingly able to be your own best adviser, steering yourself away from bad decisions and towards good ones with a minimum of fuss.
  • Self-help can be a time saver. Pursuing self-help efforts saves you the time you might otherwise need to spend with a therapist or counselor who could help you with your problems.
  • Self-help is private. If you are a private person who gets uncomfortable with the thought of sharing secrets with others, self-help can save you the embarrassment of sharing your issues and problems with another person.

The Power of Self Help

Whether you like to think of yourself as self-reliant or not, this is a powerful tool that can be used to your advantage. The reality is that you don’t need anyone to do everything for you. In fact, if you’re going to get any benefit out of doing things yourself, you’re going to have to take charge of the situation and do it yourself.

The key to self-help is in the “self”.

Self-care is about nurturing yourself on all levels—physical, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually—so you can live, love, and parent optimally.

Per this article from kripalu.org on their article entitled, “Transformative Power Self-Care”, it states:

“Maybe when you think of self-care, you have visions of pedicures and facials. Indeed, physical self-care is a big part of the overall picture. But eliminating critical thinking, not over-scheduling, releasing the need to be perfect, hiring a babysitter for dates with your partner or yourself, saying no, refusing to do things out of guilt, and giving yourself much-needed rest and downtime to refuel are also integral to total self-care.”

How to Get Unstuck in Your Life and Find Happiness

There are a few ways to be happier and get unstuck in your life. The first thing to do is to have fun and enjoy yourself.

It is important to do what you love. If you do not do this, you will not be happy. The second way is to relax. You should take frequent breaks as necessary when working long and hard at your job or business.

Go out and do something that you enjoy. Do not work so hard that you are too tired to relax.  Remember by learning strategies on how to relax and de-stress, you are one step ahead in the self-help and self-care game.
