Self-Discipline is the Highest Form of Self-Love

What Exactly Is Self-Discipline?

According to Rafael Rolli, in his October 20, 2020, Medium article discussing self-discipline and self-love, he states:

“Discipline is one of the highest, if not the highest, form of self-love. It is quite literally telling yourself that you will delay instant gratification and comfort for better things to come in the future. Discipline is trusting yourself by doing what you said you were going to do. By aligning your actions to your thoughts. From thinking to doing, to being.”

Rafael Rolli

He goes on and adds:  “True self-love is how you manage yourself in the face of adversity. What you are willing to do to create the version of yourself you admire the most.”

There’s no question that true self-love is hard. It is the hardest yet most rewarding thing you can ever do.

Discipline means doing something hard right now so that your future self can enjoy a happy life. It means passing up something that feels good at the moment as an act of self-love.

Sadness to Happiness

If you can learn to successfully ‘lean into’ mastering self-discipline, you will experience the true essence of self-love.

Eliminate Procrastination Once & For All

Yes, we all know that self-discipline is important in life, but when it comes to procrastination, self-discipline needs to be refined. If you struggle to follow through on tasks or find yourself constantly putting them off, you need some help in developing the discipline to actually do what you set out to do.

Procrastination is caused by a lack of self-discipline, lack of willpower, and the inability to start a task at the last minute.  Because self-discipline is essential to achieving your goals, this must be tackled head-on before you can go forward.

So… the very first thing you must learn to do is change your mindset.  And by making the conscientious decision to ‘change your mindset, you’re actually setting into motion the beginnings of ‘self-discipline.’

One of the easiest ways to conquer procrastination is by setting small goals. It takes a bit of planning and yes, a little bit of self-discipline. By having a schedule for yourself, you will make sure that you don’t procrastinate. When you have a list of things you want to accomplish, you can’t procrastinate because you will know exactly what you need to do next.

Getting rid of procrastination clears away in receiving amazing benefits for you.  You’ll achieve more of your goals.  By eliminating procrastination, you learn to tap more into your potential.  And by doing so, you also now have more self-control.

This paves the way to now being able to take your personal ‘self-discipline into the highest form of self-love.’

Examples of Self-Discipline

A.  You Are What You Think

One of the first things we need to do is to ‘shift our perspective’ on what self-discipline really is.  Because what you think becomes a part of you.  That being said, let’s further discuss.

Discipline is sometimes seen as something negative, that we choose to do because it is the right thing to do.  We tend to see discipline as some sort of punishment, or a set of rules that we must follow.  But actually, self-discipline is truly a form of self-love.

So, instead of thinking self-discipline, following rules of right and right, or even the simple definition of having ‘willpower’, we need to change how we think to how it really means learning to love ourselves at the highest level.

What does it really mean to love yourself?  Self-love is being patient with the rewards that come from disciplining your behavior and having respect for who you are.

Discipline is a means to happiness, not the other way around.

Yes, you are what you think.  By being able to be strong and wise enough to not let external factors determine our choices.  Instead, we must learn to let our inner voice, our inner self-love, speak for us, and be loud and concise.

B. The Power of Self-Respect in Learning Self-Discipline

“Discipline is to forgo the immediate pleasure in exchange for long-term self-respect.” – Will Smith

Self-respect is a part of self-discipline.

Discipline is all about self-respect. In fact, the dictionary defines discipline as “a habit or practice of regularly following a particular course of action.”

So if you want to be disciplined, you must also respect yourself.

If you think that this is a contradiction, then you’ve missed the point of self-discipline.

Self-discipline is an internalized act of self-respect.  This is a good thing because self-respect is the most important ingredient in a healthy life.

Self-respect means having high expectations for yourself and your abilities. It is the basis of self-confidence and self-esteem.

If you do not respect yourself, then you cannot respect others. If you respect others, then you can respect yourself.

We are all born with certain natural talents and gifts. When you begin to appreciate and ‘respect’ and accept your abilities, you become happier.

C. Disciplined Self-Love

The first step to loving yourself more is to realize that you are the one who will pay the price for the decisions you make in your life right now.

This can be hard because instant gratification is often very tempting. But, think about your future self as a separate person that is not you. If you picture yourself as someone that you love, it can be easier to remember that you have the power to either help or hurt that person.

Sometimes, starting an inner dialogue with yourself can also help! It sounds silly, but pretending to have a conversation with yourself in the future can really help you focus on the important things.

Once you recognize that self-discipline is the highest form of self-love, then you shall be closer to achieving the goals you have set for yourself.

D. Discipline Yourself in the Face of Temptation

When things are hard you are able to endure and overcome, any problem that you may face in life when you have self-discipline in your life.

This is the basic tenant that Hollywood celebrity, Will Smith offers in his ongoing motivational speeches.  It’s indispensable in order to succeed to know how to rebound from difficult situations, and how to act when you’re in the face of temptation.  Of not feeling like doing the things you should be doing.

Will reminds us to ‘persist, resist, push harder to achieve our goals.’ You can let your goals be the fire that is inside of you — a fire that will make you do things when things are not doable in others’ opinion.
